16 inch Kids Bikes for Sale

Designed for children ranging in height from 3ft 7" to 3ft 11", 16in kids bikes are a popular size for a child's second bike. Much like with smaller-wheeled bikes, proper size choice is crucial for your child being safe, comfortable and confident while riding.

Materials and components

When it comes to frame materials, cheaper options will feature a steel frame, while more premium models offer aluminum frames which are lighter and resistant to rust. Coaster rear brakes and training wheels are still commonly supplied on 16in bikes. Provided your child has the hand strength and coordination required, hand-lever operated front brakes can also be found on some models.

Colour options and finishes.

Extremely similar in construction to 12in kids bikes, 16in kids bikes are commonly sold in gender-specific options;

16 inch boys bikes

Boys 16in bikes will usually feature blue, red, green and black color options. Additional accessories common on boys bikes are racing graphics and number plates. Where a unisex bike is desired, look to the boys versions for more neutral color choices.

16 inch girls bikes

Typically just a different color to the equivalent boys versions, girls 16in bikes generally feature pinks, purples, and whites. Girls bikes will often add a few additional accessories, such as streamers and doll baskets – although these can be removed if desired. Where such accessories are not included, they are typically available for purchase at most bicycle shops.

18 inch Kids Bikes for Sale

Whilst much of the bike industry keep to the wheel sizes of 12, 16, 20 and 24 inch, some brands, such as Byk, skip the industry's more common 16in size in favor for a larger 18in wheel. The larger wheel size will typically offer greater stability, a smoother ride and increased speed. Much like 16in bikes, 18in bikes will usually feature similar accessories, color options, and training wheels as standard. When considering an 18in kids bike, ensure your child is tall enough to manage the larger wheel size.

16 inch vs 18 inch Kids Bikes

“Should my child move to a 16inch or 18inch bike after learning the basics?”

It’s a common consideration faced by parents. Whilst there is no definite answer, there are a few things to take into account. Where 16in kids bikes are recommended for children between 3ft 7" to 3ft 11" in height, 18in bikes are designed for children between 3ft 9" and 4ft 3" in height. Much of this choice is likely to be decided by your budget and brand preference.
