Overview of Scott Kids' Bikes Model

It is true that the little ones always want to have exactly what the adults have. So if you prefer to spend your leisure time on a bike, it might happen that your children want the same. And if your heart is attached to enduro, downhill or other mountain disciplines, we predict: your kids want a bike that comes in a mountain bike look. But don't despair and think that good advice would be expensive - don't worry! That's what Scott's there for.

The Scott children's and youth bikes look like a real, authentic mountain bike even in running wheel sizes, so the little ones can zoom downhill from the start - but don't forget the helmet! The Scott walking wheels and children's bikes are available in a version for boys called Voltage and in a version called Contessa for young ladies. If you have a son and a daughter, the Voltage designs are suitable for both.

For a good start: a Scott Balance Bike

Thanks to the aluminum frame, the walking wheels weigh just 4.5 kg. For walking wheels, low weight is particularly important, not only so that the children can handle the bike well. You will be hauling the bike around from time to time, up stairs, down steep slopes... every gram you save will spare your back! A carrying strap does excellent service here.

On a walking wheel, the dwarves can zoom off as soon as they can stand securely. It is important that they can comfortably reach the ground with both little feet, only then can they push off powerfully and brake safely. Because with Scott, you brake with your feet, this works safest at this age. The pad in the middle of the handlebar is more than just decoration, it is designed to prevent lacerations in the event of falls.

A running bike is now generally recommended instead of training wheels to learn to ride a bike, as it trains balance while the children practice steering and braking at the same time. If you need more information on walking wheels, you can read up on all the essentials. Walking wheels are suitable up to about the fourth year of life.

Next up: 12" Children's Bikes

After the walking wheel, a 12" children's bike is next in line. Here, too, there is a Voltage and a Contessa again. The aluminum wheels, weighing about 8 kg, are naturally heavier than a walking wheel, but a children's bike comes with a lot of equipment that does not quite match a "real" bike, but offers exactly what children can operate and what they need to be safe on the road. A hand brake and a coaster brake provide the necessary deceleration, in the beginning the coaster brake should be used mainly, too much hand brake quickly leads to unexpected maneuvers of the bike, so the children should gradually get used to the use.

Lighting systems are waived on Scott children's bikes in favor of weight, as the kids are rarely out and about in the dark. If lamps are absolutely indispensable, you can prevent tantrums by attaching battery-powered lamps to the children's bike. An important component of children's bikes is the chain guard, so fingers, skirts or jump ropes brought along do not get into the drive.

The wide tires provide a mountain bike look, and also mean the children don't have to stop for grass and gravel. Which child likes to stay on asphalt when the mud trail beckons?! Scott refrains from gearshifts on children's bikes up to 20", the kids have enough to do with pedaling, braking and steering. 12" children's bikes usually fit during kindergarten time, whereby here the body size or the inner leg length of the children is decisive, less the age.

With Scott 16" Kids Bikes to School

When the 12" kid's bike has become too small, a 16" bike is due. Here again, Scott has a Contessa with a clear girls design and a Voltage for boys or girls in the program. You can see when it's time to change the bike by looking at your child. A children's bicycle should always be so big that the child can comfortably put one foot on the ground while sitting on the saddle. While riding, the upper thigh should not be pulled up beyond the horizontal when pedaling.

If this is the case, you have to raise the saddle, if this is no longer possible, it is time for a new bike. The practical thing about Scott's children's bikes is that they remain completely the same in shape and equipment, whether in 12" or in 16". So your offspring doesn't have to get used to anything new, it can continue seamlessly with pure driving pleasure.

No More Cute!

At 20", 24" and 26" it is finally over with the children's bike. From this size onwards, your children are riding a youth bike. The bikes change in geometry and appearance. They lose the cute child design and now look like the mountain bikes of the adults. The rear pedal gives way to two hand brakes, gearshift is mandatory. The 20" bikes have 7-speed shifters with twist grip, from 24" there are derailleurs with levers installed, all Shimano - a matter of honor.

There is something for every taste: depending on the model, there are disc brakes or V-brakes, suspension forks or rigid forks. The perfect entry into the fascination of mountain biking.

What remains are the Contessa designs for the young ladies and the aluminum frames that continue to score with low weight.

Since 2019, there are E-Bikes for Kids

Apparently, there was a need, because despite all resistance, Scott has brought out an e-bike for young people. The E-Mountainbike eRIDE Roxter will be available from 2019 in 24' and 26', the larger version is also a real alternative for not too large adults. Thanks to the Bosch Active Line drive, the days of 'When will we finally get there?' and 'Is it still far?' are finally over!
